REGISTERED DIETITIAN

General Summary:

Under the supervision of the Cardiac Wellness Program (CWP) Director at the Benson Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine (BHI), the dietitian is responsible for developing, implementing and evaluating the nutrition component of the Cardiac Wellness, the Lighten Up and other BHI programs (Medical Symptom Reduction, Menopause, Infertility). This position is a 30 hours per week: 21 hours-Cardiac Wellness; 8 hours-Lighten Up; 1 hour-other BHI programs.

Principal Duties And Responsibilities

Clinical:
  • Develops and implements nutritional component.
  • Evaluates and provides individual nutritional counseling to:
    1. patients with heart disease and those at risk (CWP)
    2. patients with obesity and weight related issues (LU)
    3. patients with chronic medical issues (other BHI programs)
  • Sets mutually-agreed upon nutritional goals with patients at the beginning and end of the programs.
  • Evaluates patient progress towards nutrition goals on a regular basis and gives feedback to patients and staff.
  • Charts patient progress regarding response to nutrition interventions weekly.
  • Teaches nutrition curriculum for the educational series, which integrates an understanding of fat content of foods, sodium content, weight loss and diabetes.
  • Conducts ongoing evaluation and improvement of nutrition curriculum through a literature review and attending educational conferences.
  • Inspires and motivates patients in support of behavior change.
  • Prepares and provides a healthy snack/mini meals to group participants and reviews recipes for their nutritional value.
Administrative:
  • Attends clinical team meetings, updating the staff on patient progress towards nutrition goals, difficulties and recommendations for discharge.
  • Participates in quality assurance/utilization review of programs.
  • Participates in ongoing program development.
Teaching:
  • Participates in clinical training programs.
  • Participates in community and professional education programs.
  • Teaches nutrition curriculum.
Research:
  • Works collaboratively with the staff to develop and carry out research.
  • Maintains up-to-date nutrition knowledge as it relates to heart disease, diabetes, obesity, inflammation, and mood disturbances.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in dietetics, nutrition or foods and nutrition. Masters preferred.
  • Registered dietitian by the American Dietetic Association.
  • Licensed by the Massachusetts State Board of Registration for Dietitians and Nutritionists
  • Certified in Basic Life Support.
Skills/ Abilities/ Competencies Required:
  • Experience with PC computer software including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Effective interpersonal and communications skills.
  • Effective counseling skills: both individual and group.
  • Ability to work well both independently and as part of a team.
  • Motivational interviewing capabilities.
Working Conditions:
Outpatient clinical practice in Chestnut Hill, MA. Occasionally required to travel to MGH campus in Boston, MA.
