"With Kids in the Zone, we have developed a much-needed resource for health professionals dealing with a growing number of kids with stress-related health problems."Laura Steele, MD

KIDS IN THE ZONE
In response to parent and physician requests for help, the M/BMI has created Kids in the Zone, an innovative program for kids ages 10-14 living with stress-related health problems including asthma, insomnia, headaches, fatigue, stomach pain, nausea, bowel irregularity, dizziness, and chronic pain.

This medical program combines relaxation techniques with healthy coping skills in an enjoyable, interactive way and, as a complement to conventional treatment, helps kids make changes that lead to improvements in their physical and mental health.

We also offer a concurrent program for parents wanting to support their child's treatment in the program.

Over eight weekly 90-minute afternoon sessions, we will help kids:

Understand how stress negatively affects physical and emotional health
Reduce physical symptoms
Reduce stress
Regain a sense of control and well-being

Elements of the program include:

Practice of the relaxation response through techniques such as visualization and diaphragmatic breathing
Examination and reversal of negative thought patterns
Yoga stretching exercises
Guidelines for healthy eating
Goal setting

Concurrent with Kids in the Zone, parents may meet in a group with Patricia Arcari, PhD, director of Calm Mother, Happy Child, to learn strategies for minimizing the impact of stress on their children's minds and bodies as well as on their own lives.
