The Mind Body Program for Peri/Menopause provides self-care strategies that help relieve symptoms commonly associated with this transition. This ground-breaking program, developed by the Benson-Henry Institute (BHI) for Mind Body Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, offers a complete plan for coping with menopause symptoms so that women can enhance their midlife experience – setting them on a path toward a more fulfilling life.
We Will Teach Skills to Help You:
- Manage physical symptoms including hot flashes, insomnia, headaches, and changes in mood and sexuality
- Understand the hormonal and physiologic changes that occur during perimenopause/menopause
- Regain a sense of control and well-being
- Work in partnership with your doctor to make informed choices that can help promote lifelong health
Elements of the Program Include:
- Elicitation of the relaxation response through numerous techniques such as diaphragmatic breathing, imagery, and mindfulness
- Examination and challenging of negative thought patterns to embrace a more positive outlook
- Up-to-date nutritional information to promote heart health, bone health, weight management, and symptom reduction
- Tips for designing a exercise program suited to your needs
- Information to help in decision-making regarding hormones and other treatment options, including natural alternatives
The program combines lecture, skills training, symptom monitoring, and group sharing. It includes three individual medical visits that are billed directly to your insurance company. The group meets in the evening for nine weeks of 1.5 hour sessions. Coverage for the nine week group session is based upon your individual insurance plan, and does include a selfpay component.
Other Options Individual appointments are available for those who cannot attend the weekly program.
Program Leadership Leslee Kagan, MS, NP, director of the Mind Body Program for Peri/Menopause at the Benson-Henry Institute, is an Associate in Medicine at Harvard Medical School and first author of Mind Over Menopause: The Complete Mind Body Approach to Coping with Menopause. She is also a contributing author to Our Bodies, Ourselves: Menopause. With the Institute for many years, she has extensive experience in providing health care for women in the Greater Boston area.
The program also includes guest lectures by a physician who specializes in menopause, a nutritionist, exercise physiologist, and a yoga instructor.
