| With
stress in schools on the rise, the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine adapted
its pioneering mind/body medical programs in 1991 to create the
Education Initiative (EI). The EI presents a curriculum of
easy-to-learn life management skills that combine relaxation response
techniques with stress management, coping skills, and healthy lifestyle
behaviors. The EI's effective "train the trainer" model comprises
two phases: In phase one, we offer teachers and other members of the
school community a curriculum that has proven to be beneficial in their
personal as well as professional lives. In phase two, our staff
demonstrate how the interventions can be integrated into the classroom,
nurses' office, and counseling practices. The model can sustain itself
as school staff, once trained, can continue to teach these skills to
students throughout their careers. Over the years our EI programming has been well
received by hundreds of teachers and other school personnel as well as
by children of all ages and diverse socioeconomic and ethnic
backgrounds. We have brought our programs to schools in South Central
Los Angeles, Newark, and neighborhoods of Boston as well as to private
institutions such as Milton Academy, the Taft School, and Dana Hall.
While it is impossible to make each day at school stress-free,
equipping the school community with stress management tools can result
in an educational experience in which students are calm and ready to
learn and teachers are re-energized and focused. |
