FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. What makes this program different from others?
Most weight loss programs address one or two aspects of weight loss. Lighten Up is an all-encompassing program that treats the causes of weight gain while supporting the lifestyle changes of weight loss. We offer you an overall mind/body foundation by teaching methods to elicit the relaxation response and cultivate positive life attitudes. The latest research findings on exercise, diet, supplements, stress physiology, and metabolism are incorporated into the multidisciplinary curriculum.  

2. How can you change my metabolism?
We recommend a variety of strategies than can alter metabolism, which include periods of physical exertion, muscle toning, adequate rest, regular eating patterns, and dietary changes to increase specific spices, minerals, vitamins, fiber, plant chemicals, and healthy fats. Stress also affects your metabolism, so the stress management techniques we teach are equally essential to successful weight loss.  

3. I've lost weight on so many diets and then gained it back. Can you help me stay on track?
The people who are ultimately successful at weight loss are those who have tried many programs and, like you, have regained the weight. Ultimately, their determination is the key. Each "failed" attempt increases their overall learning of what works, what doesn't work, and fuels greater determination. We teach ways to overcome negative thought traps and "defeatism" and help you stick with your new positive changes.  

4. How do you measure success?
Success is measured by weight loss and reduced waist circumference.  

5. Why is the program 20 sessions?
Research on successful weight loss indicates a six-month period is necessary to learn new skills and to build into your life the new lifestyle changes you have made.  

6. What will I learn at each session?
Each two-and-one-half hour group session includes: 30-40 minutes of exercise; 20 minutes to eat and learn about a healthy meal; 30 minutes to review mind/body skills; and 60 minutes to focus on a new curriculum topic, such as Food Choices. Portion Sizes, Aerobic Activity, Strength Training, Stress Physiology, Nutritional Supplements, Yoga, Eliciting the Relaxation Response through Meditation, and Cognitive Restructuring.
